Hedon Inman Primary School

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has commissioned The Regen Initiative to evaluate the environmental and economic benefits of remanufacturing the existing lighting at Hedon Inman Primary School. As part of a broader estate modernisation program, this study investigates how upgrading and reusing the school’s current luminaires can support local decarbonisation goals, reduce capital expenditure, and prevent electrical waste.

Project Overview: Sustainable LED Retrofit

The school’s existing lighting consisted of multiple classrooms equipped with recessed 600 x 600mm luminaires, each originally configured with four x 14w T5 linear fluorescent lamps. To align with modern energy standards and sustainability goals, a circular economy upgrade was implemented. Instead of replacing the entire infrastructure, the project focused on converting the existing fixtures from fluorescent to LED technology. By retaining the original luminaire bodies and louvres, the school minimised material waste and preserved the architectural integration of the ceiling.

Comprehensive photometric testing was conducted before and after the intervention to ensure optical integrity. The comparative data verified that the remanufactured LED units maintained the original lighting performance while successfully meeting all unified glare rating (UGR) requirements. This guaranteed an optimal, comfortable visual environment for both students and staff without altering the spatial distribution of light.

A detailed embodied carbon analysis was integrated into the initial feasibility assessment. This data-driven approach quantified the environmental savings achieved by reusing the steel and aluminium housings compared to buying entirely new fixtures. The findings formed a core component of the final presentation to the school's leadership team, providing transparent, measurable proof of the project's carbon reduction and sustainability value.

RESUS LED Module

The RESUS (RSS-0600-4) LED modules directly replace outdated fluorescent lamps by mechanically securing into existing lamp holders. This retrofitting approach offers a highly cost-effective lighting upgrade for schools and colleges by replacing only the light engine rather than the entire luminaire.

By preserving high-quality existing fixtures and extending their lifespan, this solution delivers key benefits:

  • Cost Efficiency: Targets only the light source, bypassing the need for full luminaire replacements.

  • Easy Integration: Designed to fit seamlessly into original architectural fixtures.

  • Improved Environment: Brightens classrooms to create better learning spaces.

  • Low Maintenance: Drastically reduces the constant upkeep and lamp changes common in educational facilities.
