Arup Totems - London
As part of the continued lighting infrastructure upgrade at Arup’s London headquarters, the REGEN Initiative was formally commissioned to evaluate and enhance the illumination of the vertical Totem Markers located on each floor.

The Lighting Challenge
The original Totem design had internal steel brackets running horizontally across the mid section which prevented any form of continuous vertical lighting. This created a light shadow causing the existing lighting to fragment. The challenge was to create clean, homogeneous vertical and horizontal illumination without light pooling and without breaks.

Product Evaluation
The Totum panels are approximately 150mm wide with Opal diffusers on each side. The new led module could only be fitted on one edge limiting the access and luminaire fixing points. In order to illuminate the whole panel, a central, horizontal bracket had to be removed and a micro linear RGB narrow beam led unit added. Through trial and error the client agreed on a 20 degree beam angle.

The New Module
The agreed concept was to fit 2 x 1450mm long, 15mm wide RGB modules in each Totem on all 7 floors, arranged edge to edge to provide just short of 3m of continuous lighting. The result was a significant improvement in uniformity, the introduction of a full range of RGBW lighting which matched the recent existing lift lobby refurbishment.

The Final Results
The bespoke RGBW LED Modules made a significant improvement to the uniformity and provided continuous floor to ceiling illumination.
